Mammoth Caves are unlike any of the other caves we've been to--they're dry and somewhat less impressive, though the cave system is huge (mammoth even). Lincoln's birthplace was a fun little stop. Who am I? (Impending existential crisis.) Suddenly Who am I? (Impending existential crisis.) Suddenly, picking through crowds on a sweltering day isn't so magical (for me). Now that the littles are growing up, there's more need to get on rides and DO things rather than meander and chat while characters and bright shiny things keep them entertained. We're completely scheduled all day. And that's not my thing. Fortunately the Tiny One agrees. So we split up. The Tiny One and I headed back to the pool and the Big and Middle toughed it out. While I didn't love our time in Alaska like I'd ho While I didn't love our time in Alaska like I'd hoped I would (more on that later), I did really love those moments we got to wander around in nature and see the glaciers. I don't think a picture will ever do it justice in terms of sheer size. And these guys got the extra joy of sticking their fingers in the glacial lake. It wasn't warm. The trouble twins don't recommend swimming here. (You can catch a glimpse of Juneau's Mendenhall Glacier in the distance.)

It's incredibly dense due to the weight and years, which means there's little air in glacial ice, making it that blue color. 3kids can confirm that density as we all ate a little bit of the glacial ice and it was super hard to crunch (and made for the most perfect glacierita). And delicious. And crystal clear (it doesn't turn white or colored until exposed to the air). New love of glaciers unlocked. (Check stories or highlights for more glacier stuff.) The 3kids were lucky enough to visit Annette Islan The 3kids were lucky enough to visit Annette Island Reserve, the only Indian reservation in Alaska and home to the Tsimshian people. We learned of the history of the people, had a 9 am beach hot dog and s'mores cookout (jet lagged so it felt sensible), and then walked through the Tongass National Forest. Did you know it's the world's largest temperate rainforest? We didn't. We didn't have a car in Vancouver but had still wa We didn't have a car in Vancouver but had still wanted to head out of town, which meant we couldn't go far. Grouse Mountain was super close and easy. We took an Uber both ways, but there is also a shuttle that runs from the port in Vancouver. Just be prepared to wait a little for the sky ride up and down the mountain (though they're working on changing to a gondola system). There are a number of family friendly things to do at the top, some free and some for an additional fee. We did the ropes course up at the top of the mountain and I discovered the big one is fearless at this, the middle one can problem solve his way through it all (and has endless patience for his fear-stricken father), and the tiny one has a willingness to overcome his fear and now speed is his thing when up on the course.
