Managing Jet Lag: Tips for Travel with Kids

    April 23, 2020 /

The absolute pain of being awake when you just don’t want to be. I still have seared into my brain the discomfort of struggling to stay awake in high school classes, fighting to keep my eyes open in the passenger seat of late night car rides, forcing my eyelids open during early morning meetings. I would envision white, crisp sheets and heavy, down comforters wrapped around my body, lulling me. I’d get comfortable, then battle my way back to semi-clearheaded consciousness. It’s the same dreaded war I often wage when we travel (particularly when we fly east), except this time I’ve got kids. So, I’ve come up with some fool-proof…

15 Best Activities for Toddlers on a Plane

    September 27, 2018 /

Oh flying. Flying isn’t so bad for most people. Now throw in a toddler or two (maybe even three). And that’s where parental fear sets in. Here’s the thing: it’s great when it’s over, but sometimes that in-between time can be, well, to put it nicely, difficult. Distraction is really every parent’s best friend, and it’s no different with flying. But what really works on those three hour flights? What about the seventeen hour flights? After setting off on fifteen hour flights and three hour flights, with one, two, or three little ones in tow, we’ve found a way or two to distract the wiggly ones. So read on to…

10 Travel Items We Can’t (Or Really We Don’t Want To) Live Without

    July 16, 2018 /

I’d like to pretend we have this packing thing down. And we do. And then something happens, like a season changes or one of the little people gets a bit older and it’s like starting over again. Mostly. I mean, yes, there’s the clothes. Always the clothes. And the diapers. And the medicines. And all the other little travel items. But what about all that those other little travel items? Over the past seven years of traveling as a family, I’ve figured out that less is more. I always aim to bring just enough. Still, there are a few things that have stood out to us as travel items that…

Three Kids and a…Dash of Karma

    July 20, 2017 /

So, my gut instinct when told that I was "brave" for going on a trip with my children, was to feel defensive. What I wanted to say was that it wasn't brave. There was nothing brave about it. My children, whether at home or traveling, don't need a parent to be "brave" to be with them. They're good kids. Great kids. The best. My mother bear wanted to come out. Claws. Fangs.

The boys spent the week with @rmfcampsusa and @aki The boys spent the week with @rmfcampsusa and @akinjisoccer in Madrid, where they got to train at Real Madrid City, working in their skills, making friends, and loving every minute. 3K dad and I go to explore Madrid alone (the Big One stayed home) and check in on the boys when we'd watch their games. (Also important to note: they roomed together and both lived to tell the tale.)

Cadillac Ranch. We could've driven by it and never Cadillac Ranch. We could've driven by it and never known it existed, but luckily we did know it existed. Just outside of Amarillo, TX we searched for any small indication of that existence on Route 66. Finally we found it, parked, and walked the flattest field in an arctic blast to see it. Was it worth it? Maybe. Maybe not. We all remember it though, so that's gotta mean something.
